Heibon 5. Aide-sama is Troubled

RAW: http://ncode.syosetu.com/n8321co/6/
TL: MayonaizeShrimp

There are no important changes besides the author changes the time limit of 7 days to 20 days.

And since I had some time, let’s play the game again.

Speaking of Reyfaras Karhannah, his fame was not limited only among the people in Sarawin Empire. There is no one, even among the demon army, that didn’t know his name.

He was youngest mage ever recorded in history, only as young as 15 years old. Only 2 years later, he climbed up the ranks and became the highest ranked mage in the country. He was a kind of genius weirdo that proposed the idea that there are invisible “spirit” beings that allowed humans to invoke “magic”.

And right now, the same Reyfaras was walking through a hallway in the magic pavilion with a sour expression. He opened his office door violently, which surprised his aide who was sitting there, Arami Ceizalt. Her almond-shaped eyes behind her glasses widened in surprise.

「Is there something wrong, sir?」
「……nothing to mention about」

Reyfaras scoffed and turned his eyes towards the window.

「Rio hasn’t finished her task from Tonic?」
「Yes sir」
「I see」

Reyfaras then sat on his office chair and sighed heavily.

“Rio” was a girl who was mistakenly summoned when they were trying to summon a goddess from the other day.

She’s just average in every aspect imaginable. Since she didn’t have any ability as well, she was quickly ditched by everyone involved in the summoning process. However, it was Reyfaras himself who offered to help the girl.

「Is it about the girl?」
「……Do you know that Rio was supposed to live outside the castle from tomorrow on?」
「Yes, sir」

At first, she was only allowed to live in the castle for a week, but Reyfaras went to the emperor directly and asked for her time to be extended to 20 days.

And her time ended tomorrow.
That must be what weighed his mind.

「I just asked the King about where her new dwelling is. I thought that they would at least prepare a house somewhere around the royal capital」

We selfishly summoned her into this world and branded her as a “mistake” on a whim, so at least we should provide some sort of place where she can live.

Or so he thought…

「Why the hell did the King sent her to the Beast Fang forest!? And to a little hut at that!!」

She could understand why her superior lost his patience. But there was something that Arami couldn’t understand no matter how much she thought about it.

「If I may ask, why do you care about the girl so much?」

「Please excuse my rudeness, but as far as I can see, she is just a normal regular girl. I understand that she can see spirits just like you, but I don’t think it can be considered a powerful ability. Besides, is it really necessary for you to personally teach her magic? I would also ask the same question toward Tonic-sama as well. As the vice-captain of the Frontline Vanguard Corps, I don’t think he should be in a position to directly teach a complete amateur. He raised his sword to protect our people from monsters, so I don’t understand why he would spend his time to teach her」

It was not like Arami dislike Rio or anything, but she couldn’t help but wonder why would Reyfaras and Tonic went all out just to help her.

「……Do you know?」

「That girl practice swinging her sword right after training magic with me」

「And after that, she continues practicing magic in her own room」
「……That isー」

「She had devoured every book that I gave her since long time ago, so she came to the King and personally begged him to be allowed to go inside the royal library, and then she began reading every book including strategy」

「She did half the training that the Frontline Vanguard Corps trainees do. No matter how much she suffers or vomited, she still finished her tasks without complaining」

「She read her books in the hallway right outside this room. She kept quiet and still studying even though she was being laughed at. So, Arami, do you know about it?」

There’s no way Arami could give a proper response. Meanwhile, Reyfaras just smiled bitterly looking at her.

「Even I don’t know why I did it」
「I don’t even know why I am doing these for her. Maybe because she views the same world as I do」

It was the first time Reyfaras met someone who had something similar to him. Someone who could see spirits and interact with them. Perhaps that was why he couldn’t just ditch her somewhere along the road.

「I am also responsible for summoning her. I, myself, was one of those people who forcefully summon her. So perhaps, my sense of responsibility is also one of the reasons why I helped her」

Reyfaras didn’t participate in the second summoning because he had drained all of his mana to the summoning magic square just to summon Rio.

She. Is. His. Responsibility.
She was his responsibility and his alone.
So he saved her before she killed herself by cursing the King right onto his face.

「I thought she would bawl her eyes out at first……」
「I thought she would cry, throwing a tantrum and screaming to be sent home, all while cursing every single one of us. But she didn’t…」

She probably did indeed resent them.
But she didn’t cry.
She didn’t hate those who had summoned her.
She didn’t give up.

『Look at me』
『You will regret it』

He could see her strong willpower behind her black eye.

「Perhaps that is why I helped her. Just like you said before, Rio is way too average. Her only ability is the same one as mine, to be able to see spirits. But I think that is why she has the power to be the strongest. At least that is what I think」

She was being told that she was just average from the very beginning. For that reason alone, she spared no effort and tried to set a new goal for herself.

She was just that kind of a person.
Her kind of personality is the one that charmed people around her to stop and lend her a hand.

Just like me.
Also, she was loved by the spirits.

Reyfaras knew it because there are a lot of spirits gathered around her when she cast magic, far more than when he tried to cast magic himself. There is no reason that kind of girl cannot become strong.

If she were to be allowed to live in the castle, Reyfaras’ guidance will definitely help her grew into someone with even more powerful than Reyfaras himself. Her swordsmanship wouldn’t even lose to the knights in the knight order.

If she lives somewhere around the royal capital, she could at least learn by watching the knight or magic organized battle-royal event. There will be many chances for her to study.

「So why the hell did they sent her to the Beast Fang Forest!? Isn’t that basically asking her to kill herself!?」

Arami flinched. It was not like Reyfaras to shout like that. She cranked her head for every information regarding that forest.

「Speaking of the Beast Fang Forest, isn’t it the forest that could be reached within 1 day on a horse carriage from the royal capital? I have never been there myself, but from what I heard, there are a lot of monsters that inhabit that forest. They even prohibit normal civilian from entering」

「That is correct. It is a place where apprentice knight would go to at the end of apprenticeship. Their final task would be hunt a monster that inhabit that forest. It’s a very dangerous place………
And they send a GIRL to live alone in that kind of place! Isn’t that basically a death sentence!?
What. The. Hell. Did the king even think!?
We taught Rio on how to use magic and weapons, but not to prepare her to live in that kind of place!!」

Of course, Reyfaras had conveyed his disagreement towards the King himself and asked him to reconsider.

Unfortunately, the King ignored his request.
There was no one else to turn to.

「……Arami, please prepare a piece of paper and draw a Teleportation Magic Square」

Reyfaras suddenly raised his head in a quick motion.

「A teleportation magic square?」
「Exactly. If the King wants to keep Rio away from us and send her to live in such a dangerous place, we can just prepare a tool so we can rush to her place at moments notice」

Teleportation magic square is a magic tool that allows people to move to another distant place instantly.

Magic Square themselves was a little bit different from the magic that the humans use in this world. It was a tool made by writing magical characters onto a surface and load it with mana.

Since magic squares couldn’t apply any attribute to the invoked magic, it was also called the “non-attribute magic”.

There were only a few people who can draw magic squares. And there are even fewer people who can use those magic squares.

Arami was one of those people who could use magic squares.

「Wouldn’t it be dangerous if the King heard about this matter, sir?」
「You are right. But what of it?」
「What would he do then? Fire me? That would be even better. I could just live in the Beast Fang Forest with Rio and teach her magic. Or, would he try to put me in jail? He should have realized it himself that such menial confinement methods are meaningless against me.
Besides, I refuse to serve under a King who made such a stupid decision like that. If he revoked my High Mage title, I can just do as what I had said before. There nothing he could do to cause trouble for me. It will result in him digging his own grave instead」
「Does the position of High Mage not satisfy you?」

「I have no attachment for it. I wanted to prove the existence of spirits, hence why I aimed to be a High Mage. But my theory was dismissed 7 years ago. I didn’t quit because there is no reason to do so, but if the King insists to fire me, then it shall be done」
「I believe the King wouldn’t come to such decision」
「That is for us to see」

While Reyfaras said it with his brightest smile ever, Arami was at her wit’s end. If Reyfaras resigned from his position, it will start a domino effect. The mages who strived to be like him will quit one after another. But more than anything, his mana and magical prowess was the best one in this country.

He was supposed to teach magic to the Goddess-sama, but since he declined, Harwyn Lycrawl had to fill the position as the other High Mage.

If Reyfaras refuse to fight for the country, Sarawin Empire’s strength would suffer. And the final nail in the coffin would be the Frontline Vanguard Corps, who fought right at the very front, would turn their sword towards the Emperor for putting them into danger even further.

And all hell would break loose.

It’s been a common knowledge among the Frontline Vanguard Corps that what their captain hate the most is having his men died due to serving an incompetent leader. The captain, Cryhart Sharginal had proudly declared that he refuses to be degraded and serve an incompetent king and rather kill the King himself.

Vice-captain Tonic had also clearly declared that he only serve under captain Cryhart, not the King. If captain Cryhart made up his mind to kill the King, vice-captain Tonic would gladly help sharpen the sword.

If Reyfaras went out of the picture, the whole country would fall.

「……I will draw the teleportation magic square」
「I’ll be relying on you」

Arami couldn’t help but feel nauseated.
She resolved herself.
When things hit the fan, she would go and follow Reyfaras and the girl.

Arami gave Reyfaras a polite bow and left the office.

Heibon 4.5 Extra. The Day I Invoke the Goddess’ Wrath

RAW: http://ncode.syosetu.com/n8321co/5/
TL: mayonaizeshrimp.wordpress.com

Lil’ bit of context here.

This chapter happened right after chapter 4, but it was written right after chapter 13.
So this has never been TLed before.

This is written in the Goddess Misaka Reina’s PoV and establish her character and relation with other characters. Since I forgot about most of these names (and so must you) I’ll have a lil character intro first before the actual chapter.

  • MisakaReina –> the girl summoned after our MC
  • Lurunas –> the princess
  • Harwyn –> the top 2 mage in the kingdom besides Reyfaras

Since we’ve put it out of the way, please enjoy the extra chapter.

Reina raised her voice.
Currently, she was escorting Lurunas inside the Magic Pavilion.
They were on their way to visit Harwyn when she found a figure of someone with silver hair.

「Lurunas, please wait here a bit, kay? 」

「Eh? Reina?」

Leaving the confused Lurunas behind, she swung her long legs and chased after the distant figure.

The one she chased after was Reyfaras Karhannah, one of the top 2 mages of this country.

She could see his cold blue eyes when he turned around to look at her. However, his attitude won’t be like that for long. Even when he was speaking with Reina, or anyone, he addressed them with a cold attitude.

His silver hair, deep blue eyes, and cold attitude towards anyone and everyone is what made people call him the “Mage of Ice”. Only after you became very *very* close to him that he will warm up and changed his cold attitude.

That is what she always wanted, for him to warm up with her.

But it has yet to happen.
Reina wanted him to address her just like Harwyn, just like Lurunas, just like the prince Kagarudin.

She wanted him to look at her.
To warm up to her.
To yearn for her.

She wanted his perfect gender-less face and high-ranked position.
Is it wrong for her to want him based on that reason alone?

「Good afternoon, Reyfaras-san! Where are you going this time?」
「……Ah it’s you. Do you have any business here? This is not the path to Harwyn’s place」
「I saw Reyfaras-san from afar and decided to drop by and greet you」

He frowned after hearing that sentence. And suddenlyー

「Rio! You’re still not done!? Too slow!! It’s almost midday already!!!」
「I am sorry!!!!!」

They could hear someone getting scolded from the knight’s training ground, followed by the sound of someone apologizing.

「So there’s a woman joining the knights, I see. Poor girl, she’s getting yelled at. Isn’t that right, Reyfaras-sa… n…」

Reina looked at the training ground and smirked, but when she returned her gaze toward Reyfaras…

「It’s her again… good grief……」

It was… warm…
Reyfaras’ eyes were very warm.
There was a soft smile on his face and he muttered those word in a gentle manner.

That’s not how the “Mage of Ice” usually looked like.
It’s not the Reyfaras that Reina knew usually looked like.

「Then I shall excuse myself, Reyfaras-san」
「Hm… ah yes… sure」

His reply struck her dumbfounded.
She was half-hoping that he will prevent her from leaving.

She waited for him to call out to her, but it never happened……

「Reina, don’t deal with that guy anymore… Reina?」

Lurunas, who was supposed to stay and wait for her, came over and warned her, but Reina didn’t even budge.

「Umm… Reina?」

Only after inspecting a lot closer that Lurunas realized what adversary she was about to invoke. Reina’s eyes were blazing with the flame of anger and glaring at every opportunity.

「A! …Y-yes?」
「Do you know anyone with the name “Rio”?」
「Rio…? Oh, perhaps it was the name of the girl who was mistakenly summoned when we were summoning you, Reina」
「Mistak……? Ah yes, I think I remember someone like that」

She ponders for a while and remembered. When she was summoned to this world, there was a girl with a totally different appearance from the people of this country.

「It seemed that she was allowed to live in this castle for 20 days. Currently “that guy” is looking after her」
「That guy…… Eh? Was it Reyfaras-san?」
「Yes. It appears that he asked for the job himself. And he sent her for morning training with the Frontline guys as well」
「…… She’s here for only 20 days… is it…?」
「Then what will happen to her afterward?」
「I don’t know. Maybe she will be given lodging somewhere around the capital. In any case, she will live on her own after getting the boot」

「Around royal capital…… No, that’s won’t do」
「I forgot I have some business with Kagarudin. Please tell Harwyn that I’ll go to his place later!」
「Ha? eh? Re-reina!?」

She turned around and dashed.
Reina can’t have her stay around the royal capital.

It’s way too close.
He will… Reyfaras will be able to see her at any time.

She must be sent somewhere further.
Somewhere Reyfaras will not be able to go easily.

「Everyone is mine.
I am the chosen one.
They chose me as the goddess of this world!
I won’t let that woman stop me right before my goal!!」

The people of this country kneeled before her, praising her beauty.

Her wish became true.
To become beautiful.
To become someone of a status.

But Reyfaras and some other people refused to be involved and seemed to avoid any sort of contact with her. Those people were the ones who were labeled as the “Weird” of this country. Unfortunately, Reyfaras was one among of those “Weird” people. But his appearance, his ability, his position were good enough to ditch that label off.

Reina believed that no matter what kind of “Mage of Ice” a person is, if she kept talking with that person and gave them her sincerest smile, they would open up their heart.

Because she is 『Special』.
Because everyone said that she’s 『Special』.

And yet, he didn’t even look at her, a goddess.
He instead looked at another ordinary woman.

Reina gave him her smile.
Reina gave him her attention.
Reina extended her hand and tried to reach for him.
And yet, he still looked at another ordinary woman.

Somewhere further.
She will send her somewhere further.
Somewhere nobody would even go.

A place where she would never appear before her or Reyfaras again.

If she asked Kagarudin, the prince of this country, it will be easy to change where she will be sent to. If he refuses, she could just ask the King directly.

「You are such a bad girl, Rio. He’s mine. Everything and everyone is mine!」

She hid the anger from her eyes and went through the hallway.

Heibon 4. 20 Days Before Deadline

RAW: http://ncode.syosetu.com/n8321co/4/

Not much differences here. The author just added some minor details and changed a week into 20 days for immersion purposes.

I want to say something to everyone.
If you put your mind into something, humans can do everything.

No, I’m serious. I’m not joking.
It’s what happened to me right now.
In these 20 days… no… it’s 19 days to be precise. Anyway, in these past 19 days, I’ve been “struggling to stay alive”. I tried my best to keep only 1 foot in the afterlife.
Or rather, I’d be killed if I slack.
My “teachers” were spartans.

First of all, let’s introduce the one in charge of raising physical strength and teaching self-defense for the knights and me. Holding the great duty of assisting and training the 『Frontline Vanguard Corps』 and going head first to fight against the demons, the vice-captain, Tonic Elchance.

The 『Royal Guardian Corps』 is assigned to escort and guard the King and his relatives, as well as several important nobles. The 『Imperial Garrison Corps』 is assigned to guard the royal capital. The 『People Garrison Corps』is assigned to guard cities and town besides the royal capital. And the last, the 『Frontline Vanguard Corps』 that I explained before.
There are a few more sub-division for them, but right now I have nothing to do with them.

Returning to Tonic-san, even though he looked ordinary but his abilities are truly astounding. According to Rey-sama, the Frontline Vanguard Corps gathers all the battle maniacs among the knight’s order. Therefore, the people here are way stronger than any other corps, but they are also a bunch of weirdoes.

……Why do weird people gather around me?

The weird Rey-sama even gave Tonic-san his own『weird』 stamp of approval. That’s some weird-ception going on here.

「You want me to teach her basic self-defense in 20 days? It would be easier if you told me to teach a baby to speak fluently in a week 」

It’s the first thing Tonic-san said when Rey-sama introduced me that morning.

In other words, a baby is smarter than me.
There’s no word to describe that kind of shock.

Rey-sama went and exchanged some words with him. Tonic-san turned towards me and sighed, signaling the start of my hell.

The routine for the Frontline Vanguard Corps routine is as follows.
Morning: wake up before the sun rises and run about 2 hours around the royal castle. Then do 3 reps of 1000 sit-up, push-up, and squats. Then without taking a rest, they spar with a wooden sword.

No ordinary people can even imagine the amount of exercise I did on that single day. But… in case for modern people from modern society. There’s no way they can do that. Tonic-san, who saw me dying after running, made a special menu for me. It consists of 1 rep of 100 sit-ups, push-up, and squat.

After he reduced it, I never stop until the menu is over.
Even though I hyperventilate.
Even though my muscle strained.
Even though my body hurts everywhere.
I didn’t stop until the menu is over.

It was around noon when it’s time for me to spar. Tonic-san mercilessly beat me down while abusing me with his words… When the one-sided battle ended, I was finally able to eat my breakfast and lunch.

After a little rest, it’s time for the other spartan instructor, Rey-sama, to enter the stage.

My experience with him was… well… terrible.
Why? It’s because of Rey-sama’s cold gaze.
It’s the first time I know the feeling when your spine froze when a person is staring at you coldly. Unlike Tonic-san who used word abuse and physical violence, the combination of Rey-sama’s silent sigh and absolute-zero-degree gaze is enough to break my heart.

After the time is over, I read the book Rey-sama gave me, took a little break, and practice my magic.

However, practicing magic has its own trouble. I couldn’t control my magic yet, so my magic went havoc and blow away the documents on Rey-sama’s desk several times and I was kicked out of his office. SinceI had to ask Rey-sama on parts that I didn’t understand, I couldn’t go too far from his office. Since I couldn’t go inside the room next to his office without his permission, I had to continue my studies in the hallway.

The passing people were giving me strange glances, chuckling, and whispering about me. But they couldn’t stop me from studying.

Originally, I didn’t like losing to someone.
If I give up, the king and those mages who told me that I’m useless would win.
I’ll show that they are wrong.
Once I decided on something, I’ll follow it through until the end.

And now, I decided to grit my teeth and scratch my way up.
Even though Rey-sama and Tonic-san threw cruel words at me, and even though they took a cold attitude towards me, they never tell me to do the impossible.

No matter how long it took for me to get up, they waited patiently for me.

They never tell me “that’s enough” or “don’t overdo it”.
Instead, they tell me “It’s not impossible” and “Stand on your own feet”.
That’s what they said.

They believed in me.

They’re different from those who tossed me aside as a “mistake”.
They don’t have any obligation on me, but they are still trying to survive in this world.

When I realized that, I don’t feel the bitterness from the harsh training anymore. The glances from random passerby didn’t break my heart anymore.

I’m growing stronger.
I had to maximize my effort in this limited time.
I wished to thank them with a smile when I leave this place.
I would take everything I could learn and took them as my own.

I decided to do it in these 20 days.

When I sparring with a newcomer, I could somehow pull a draw, and sometimes I could even winning by a thin margin.
I learnt to use 3 kinds of weapon which are dagger, one-handed sword, and bow.
These were simple enough to be handled by a woman, and these were as far as I could master in the very short time.

As Rey-sama ordered, I managed to learn the intermediate magic of all attributes. I could even use advanced magic from wind attribute.
I got along with the spirits as well.
They couldn’t speak, but I could gues what they were saying from their movements.

I finished reading the book that Rey-sama gave me and I gained a good amount of knowledge. In this limited time, I have taken everything I can take to live in this world.

And with that, my 20th morning in this world approaches.

Heibon 3. I Witnessed a Cheat!

RAW: http://ncode.syosetu.com/n8321co/3/

From this point onwards is my translated version of the updated chapters. There are no much differences from the previous version so you can skip this one.

According to Rey-sama, the one who first inspected me was another high-magician, Harwyn Lycrawl. He was nominated to teach magic to the Goddess, Misaka-san, so he came and boasted about it to Rey-sama.

At that time, Rey-sama was negotiating to extend my stay in the royal castle to the king from a week to 20 days, so Rey-sama totally ignored him. The goddess, Misaka-san, came and asked Rey-sama to teach her magic and it started a trouble.

Feeling irritated and annoyed, Rey-sama returned right after receiving the king’s permission, ignoring Harwyn-sama and Himeri-san who were still talking.

「So that was what happened. Thank you very much 」
「For goodness sake, where did that Misa… no… Goddess-sama’s modesty when she first came? She managed to gather all the influential people in only a few hours to teach her」
「Umm, well, what kind of a person she is and who taught her doesn’t really matter to me. So please don’t think too hard about it 」

I said so while a spirit approaching his hand, nudging on him. Rey-sama gave a bitter smile and handed a book to me.

「Please read it on your free time. It contains the history of this world and basic knowledge about magic. 」

I flipped the pages and sighed.
I never thought that I would learn a new history lesson at this age.

「Oh, thankfully the summoning quality gave me the ability to read this world’s character 」

The characters used were different from those in the previous world, but some kind of correction has been done so I can read it without any inconvenience.

「Since I can to take a day off, I’ll teach you about magic. 」

We moved to a small room with a pretty wooden table and 2 chairs right next to Rey-sama’s office. We sat face to face and he taught me about the magic of this world.

The magic of this world divided into 7 attributes: fire, water, wind, earth, lightning, light, and darkness. Usually, each person has 1 attribute, but in some rare cases, there are people with multiple attributes.

「By the way, my attributes are fire, water, and light. Furthermore, I have the ability “Farsight” 」

「3 attributes… but what is “ability”?」

I heard something from Rey-sama’s remark about his cheats.
Now when I think of it, Harwyn-sama said that I have “no abilities” to the king.

「Ah, it seemed that I haven’t explained that to you. “Ability” is a power that normal people don’t possess. Its rarity is similar to people who have multiple attributes. My “Farsight” allows me to see everything within 5 kilometers radius. Even though it needs a lot of concentration to use 」
「…By the way, Rey-sama, how much mana do you have?」

「28000 」

He’s a cheat character. Cheat-sama is here.

“Mana” is how much magical power a person has. Average people have about 8000 mana and you need at least 10000 to be a magician. To be a High Mage you need at least 15000 mana, but even among the middle-class mages, there aren’t many who surpassed the 12000 mana. People who have more than that is about as rare as tsuchinoko.

The god is sure unfair…

My mana is about 8900, which is totally average.
Even more, my attribute is wind, which is the third most common attribute in this world.

「Don’t be so depressed. Just the fact that you’re able to see spirits puts you in a much advantageous position compared to other people. 」
「What do you mean by that?」

「From the very beginning, the concept of “magic” and “attributes” are a bit different to us, who are able to see spirits 」

「Well, I had to experiment and teach myself about this matter, so I don’t really have a good basis. First of all, there’s a difference in how we process “magic” 」
「Aah, like how you manifest a “phenomenon” by giving mana to spirits? 」

「Exactly. And then an “attribute” is applied. “I can only use magic according to the attribute that I have” is the most common way of thinking in this world. However, not only the 3 attributes that I have, I can use all attributes in this world. 」
「Eh? Rey-sama can use all attribute? But how?」

「That’s the difference that I said earlier. Spirits also have attributes. Fire is red, water is blue, wind is green, earth is yellow, lightning is purple, light is white, and darkness is black. So for someone like me who can see spirit, “attribute” is just a matter of “finding the right spirit”. 」
「The right spirit?」

「It’s basically spirit with demand the least mana payment for the job. You might call it compatible spirit as well. 」
「Eh? In other words, that is how you can use other attributes even though you have different attribute?」

「That is correct. 」

What is this!!
There’s a possibility that I can become a cheat too!
After all, I always wanted to be an unbeatable cheat magician.

「But, can I do it with my average mana?」
「You can increase your mana value by training to a certain extent. The thing that you need now is mana control. 」

「mana control?」
「It’s how you adjust your mana to use magic. For example, the mana necessary for borrowing the compatible spirit is about 10. If you can control your mana properly, you can use 10 mana to cast without wasting any points. If you can’t control your mana, you will need more than 10 to cast the same magic. 」

「I see. Eh? Does that mean that I have to memorize all of this while I’m staying here?」
「I’d like you to be able to control your magic properly if possible. But that won’t be easy to do. Tomorrow, you are going to join the knights on their morning training to build up your strength. Physical strength directly translates into mana. I asked them to teach you basic self-defense. 」

「Early morning training…」

「After that, you’re training magic with me. First of all, we’ll start with wind magic that you possess. We are aiming for you to use the intermediate spell from all attributes in under 20 days. 」

「Intermediate spell of all attribute…」

This world’s magic is divided into several difficulties: beginner, intermediate, high, ultra-high, god, ancient, and finally taboo.

「The basic knowledge of this world is written in the book I gave you. Train magic or martial arts in your spare time. Even after you leave the castle, I think I’ll come visit you, but I’m often busy. Just think of it as a rare opportunity. That’s why all my time available to teach you is important. We can’t waste any second. Now prepare yourself to study to death. 」

「y-yes…… 」

It seemed that Rey-sama is a spartan instructor.
I’m worried about my safety for tomorrow, but it’s also true I have no other choice.
For now, I’ll do my best not to die.

Heibon 2. I Can See Spirits

Like I said before, the author added more details.

The original link for this chapter is dead so I have to use wayback machine to bring this up to the surface.

The white-robed man who apologized to me is called Reyfaras Karhannah.

He served as a high mage in this kingdom.
He was the “High Mage.”

That title was that important that I had to say it twice.

The High Mages in this Kingdom were given white robes with golden embroidery.

With only two high mages in the country, their magical talents were considered prodigious. Their social position would even allow them to offer their opinion to the King if it were concerning about magical matters.

In other words, Reyfaras-sama is a big shot.

After the High Mage, the next color of embroidery is silver for the Middle Ranked Mages. And for the mages with the least amount of status, the Low Ranked Mages were given black embroidery.

Even though I said they had the lowest position, just becoming mages in service to the crown was enough to be praised by the regular citizens.

Now then, I was currently in a building slightly away from the throne. The building is called Magic Pavilion. It’s a place where mages carried out their work and Reyfaras-sama’s office is in this building.

It was already been an hour since I had been told to wait there. Since I had a lot of free time, I tried speaking to the things that I saw everywhere since I came to this world.

「Hey, are you guys fairies or something?」

It’s not as if there was a person there. Or actually, it’s not like I could ask someone if there was a “fairy” there.

The one I spoke to were the things that kept getting into my vision even if I didn’t want them to. These little things had a human-like figure with wings sprouting from their backs.

Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Purple, Black, and White, there were seven types of them with clothes and hair in each of their own respective colors and they always lingered in my field of vision. The people around didn’t seem to pay them too much attention until now, but they sparked my curiosity.

When I called out to the two small creatures(?) who had been frolicking around, they froze for a moment, and when I blinked they hid in the shadow of the bookshelf.

Oh, my…

「Oi, umm, I won’t do anything so can you come out?」

Unexpectedly, the red one peeked out from behind the bookshelf.

「Hello, I am Akizuki Rio…Or maybe Rio Akizuki instead in this world. Nice to meet you.」

To my self-introduction, the two looked at each other, then approached fluttering their wings.

「What exactly are you guys? …Eh, wai-, what is it?」

Without responding to my question, the two patted me with a sudden interest. For the time being, I let them do what they want, but before I knew it, their number increased.

In addition to the two reds, there were three greens.
Then, a yellow and a blue one joined in.

pat pat pat pat pat pat pat……

「Ahh, jeez!! What do you guys want!?」
「It’s because it’s rare for there to be a human who can see them.」

Just when I became fed up with the patting and yelled out, Reyfaras-sama returned to the room.

Wait a second…

「Humans who can see are rare…?」
「You can see them, can’t you? These guys」

He lightly poked the blue that came up to him while asking so I nodded, and he nodded “as I thought” in return.

「Eh, you mean no one can see them? Is that why these little guys don’t especially touch them?」
「It’s because they can’t touch what they can’t see. As far as my vast knowledge, you’re the second one who can see these guys. The first one is me, though.」

「Ah, um, Reyfaras-sama, what exactly are these guys?」

Even though I asked the most pressing matter, for some reason Reyfaras-sama frowned silently.

「Excuse me?」
「…Why are you using speaking politely? The way you spoke from before was much more natural. 」
「Eh? Because Reyfaras-sama is an influential person, aren’t you?」
「So what?」
「No, what do you mean so what… 」
「I just stopped you from getting executed because you were about to throw hostile remarks towards the King. So even if you decide to renew yourself by using polite speech now, on the contrary, it feels gross」

That was a lot to take in.
But well, he basically gave me consent to speak casually, so I’ll take that.

「Umm, then I’ll take you up on your offer and speak casually, but what are they?」
「They’re “spirits.”」
「Correct. ”Magic” is the phenomenon when people manifest the magic power they possess outside of their body. To do that, the user’s mana and their power of imagination are crucial. And so, to make that imagination easier arias are often used. Chanting arias helps to create a better image for more specific spells, as they would be able to restrain the mana cost until the activation of the spell. That is this world’s concept of magic.」

「But in reality, that concept is wrong. The magic we use actually occurs when we pay compensation to the spirits using the mana housed within ourselves and borrow their power to bring forth the phenomena we wished for.」

「Hm? Hm? Hm? Umm… In other words…?」
「Let’s imagine that I want to create a fireball in my palm. However, no matter how much I imagine or gather mana to the top of my palm, no matter how diligently I recite the aria, the fireball would never appear. Now here, I’ll transfer my mana to a fire attribute spirit and imagine a fireball in the same way. Once I do so,」

Two red spirits from Reyfaras-sama’s surroundings drew near and directed their tiny hands towards his palm.

As soon as they did, they shimmered faintly and a fireball was created in Reyfaras-sama’s hand.

Is that the mana that Reyfaras-sama mentioned?

「Do you understand?」
「Meaning, without these spirits then magic in this world would be impossible but most people don’t know about this phenomena」
「Rather than most people, it’s only you and I who know about this fact」
「Have you tried talking to anyone else about this?」
「I have. I did right after I became a High Mage, but no one believed me. Instead, I was labeled as… ehem… an “eccentric person” and have come this far. 」
「They didn’t believe you? Why?」

「Rather than believing in the spirits they’re can’t see, it seemed that they want to believe that they can accomplish something using their own power」
「I see. And? Why did you decide to speak to me about the subject that you’ve been denied on?」

「You can see these guys, can’t you?」
「Is that it? Just because of that?」

Having asked, Reyfaras-sama grinned.
Evil… Or it’s better to say, it’s an impish smile.

「Why don’t we strike back at the people who denied us?」

Reyfaras-sama’s unexpectedly crooked personality certainly doesn’t suit his face.

「Even before this spirits business, you must’ve been quite an eccentric person, Reyfaras-sama」
「”Rey” is fine.」
「Then please refer to me as “Rio” as well. Nice to meet you, Rey-sama.」
「You don’t need the “sama” either though. Well, whatever. I’ll be in your care as well, Rio. The length of your stay in this castle is 20 days. In that limited timeframe, I’ll strictly teach you about this world and magic.」
「20 days…」

I took my reassuring comrade’s hand into mine.
