Enjoy chapter 11

Two figures emerged from the magic formation. It was Rey-sama and Tonic-san.

「Rio, what were you doing for the past 2 weeks?」
「I umm… I lived here normally 」

「If you really “lived normally”, why did you wait 2 whole weeks to activate the teleportation magic?」
「Ah… that is…」

I turned my eyes away from Rey-sama towards Av, who was standing behind me.
I noticed for the first time that Av’s eyes turned blue.

「Eh? Av, your eyes…」

The spirits flew around me as I about to ask.  Reading from their gestures, they were telling me not to mention about Av’s eyes. For some reason, I thought Av was trying to hide the color of his eyes from them.

「And that person is?」

Rey-sama raised his eyebrow while inspecting Av.

「Ah, he is… umm…」

I couldn’t find words to introduce him.
I didn’t even know anything about him in the first place.
How should I introduce him…

「I’m Avart. 」
「「……」」
「He uhh… he helped me when I was attacked by monsters on the very first day, since then he kept coming to see the situation 」
「「「………」」」
「…」

I beg you guys, please don’t stay quiet. I didn’t like when they staring at each other.  I didn’t want to caught in-between.  The spirits also flew around in worry and the monsters were watching from outside the window.

「Any injury?」

「Eh?」

The question startled me.

「You said that monsters attacked you on the first day. Are you hurt somewhere?」
「Ah, yes. I’m fine since Av healed me. 」

He find it agreeable and nodded.  Rey-sama, who was watching our conversation, finally came closer and sigh.

「Well, I have many things that I wanted to hear, but since Rio is fine, that alone is enough. Good work for these past 2 weeks. 」

For the first time I finally noticed.

They… they are so kind.
They are really kind.
Even when they said harsh things, even when they made me do difficult things, they are really kind.
Even though I fell, they waited until I got up.
They never offered their hands, but they never ditch me in the mud.
Even when they told me that I’m reckless, they still believed in me.
As clumsy as I am, they are still kind.

I finally noticed this happiness after I left them.

「I guess living in this world is not so bad after all 」

After coming into this world, it’s the first time I said those words sincerely with a smile.  Rey-sama and Tonic-san were shocked hearing my words, but still, I couldn’t stop smiling in happiness.

***

「Now if I think about it, I remembered that there was a document about monsters liking sweet things…」
「I never thought that someone would even try that and succeed 」

Rey-sama and Tonic-san decided that living together with monsters were not that dangerous and started to relax. I explained why the monsters didn’t attack me and they were quite stunned when they know the reason.

「Most monsters in this area seemed to be the less ferocious, so I guess Av did a good job too」
「Are you familiar with monsters?」
「I can’t say I’m an expert, but… well, I guess I am quite familiar with them 」

「Where do you live?」
「I live in a small village near here. I only visit every now and then to get food 」

「So you just happened to stumble across Rio? 」
「Yeah. I thought about abandoning her at first, but she still have a will to stay alive. So I guess it couldn’t be helped. 」

「Well, this girl is certainly have a pointless amount of persistence」
「She can’t just give up and let it go. 」
「I agree. 」

「Hey, are you praising me or insulting me?」

For the first time, the 4-person table were filled.
It’s a laid-back afternoon, but if you look at the members, they were completely outrageous.

One is the strongest magician in the kingdom.
One is a vice-captain of the army.
A powerful person who can see spirits.
And a visitor from another world.
All of them were surrounded by monsters and spirits.

I wonder if we can take over the kingdom with these members.

「Rio, are you listening?」

As I was daydreaming, Rey-sama unexpectedly turned his face and asked me.

「Eh? Umm…」
「So you’re not listening」
「I am terribly sorry! 」

He told me to focus and continued his talk.

「A month from now, the Demon Lord Subjugation Corps would be formed with the goddess as the lead. Both Tonic and I were nominated as members」
「That’s why from this day onwards, for the whole month, we will give you your last lessons」

「The last…?」
「Even if both Tonic and I are strong, we also have our own limits 」
「Both Rey and I rejected all offers, but in the end that girl Misaka decides the last members. Well, it’s no doubt that Rey and I would be selected as a member. But among them, there are one of the top magician, Harwyn Lycrawl, and the head of the King’s royal guard, Lurunas Islean. If the commander is no good, then we basically lost the war 」

「There’s still hope if Cryhart-sama would take command, but with this situation, I think this subjugation would end up in failure 」
「You know it and still going?」
「We are also people of this country. Even though we’re not loyal to the king, I don’t want to see it destroyed. At least, there are some people who I don’t want to die. 」

「That is correct. By the way, you are one of them too. 」
「Eh?」

「Of course you are. That’s why I shove all my work to my men and came here. Even if we are gone, at least Rio can live. 」
「……」

A bunch of emotions swelled inside me, but I clenched my fist and held them in.

I wonder if I can ever return their kindness.
I couldn’t do anything. Why couldn’t I do anything for them?
They taught me to fight.
They taught me everything to live in this world.
But I couldn’t give them anything.

I was powerless.
I was too weak to do anything for them.
I was so weak that my teachers have to die to protect me.

However, that was why I would take everything they could teach.
Learning everything in this 1 month so they could focus protecting themselves and not worrying about me while in battle.

That was the only thing I could do.

Heibon 10. Trials Comes One After Another

RAW: http://ncode.syosetu.com/n8321co/10/

What?
In case anyone ask, I’m NOT picking this up.

A fragrant and sweet scent fills the air.

「Yosh!」

Rio smiled happily with a massive amount of freshly baked cookies. Something tapped the window *konkon* and a 2-headed crow rush tried to nudge open the window.

「Okay okay, I’m going now. Please wait. 」

She gave the crow a bitter smile and went outside with the cookies piled up.

「Omatase-shimashita!!」 (TL: Sorry I made you wait!)

If you opened the door and went outside, there were many things scattered around. So many different shaped things… commonly refered as “demons”.
They watch Rio with her platter piled up cookies and smiled in excitement.

「I have to more dishes so please wait a moment. 」

She put the large plate in front of the demons and returned inside. She did the same thing twice more .

「Now please dig in!!」

With that cue, the demons flock to the cookies at once.

Rio’s “Feeding monsters with cookies” plan was a success!
Moreover, it was a great success.

Obviously, there were not enough ingredients after 3 days since she started feeding. In other words, a lot of ingredients needed to be gathered. It was a great success since most of the ingredient is not related to cookies at all. In addition, it was a greater success that the 2-headed crow, a few wolves, and some rabbit-like monster came to eat.

That was how she lived in the 『Beast Fang Forest』 since 2 weeks ago.
Anyway, the man called Avard also visiting the hut every 2-3 days.

Nothing is known except his name.

When she ask where did he came from, he said that he came from nearby villages. Why there was a villages where the people wanted to live near such a dangerous forest? In other words, it’s a small village that wasn’t exist on the map.

When she asked what do you do, he said that he was a “freelancer”.
What kind of “freelance” where people need to be brave enough to come alone into a dangerous forest? She asked if he was a knight or a mercenary, but the answer was no.

She asked why monsters didn’t harm him at all, the answer was 「It’s just the way it is」. Even though she have so many questions, she gave up because his atmosphere clearly states that he didn’t want to hear another question.

After all, he deflect every single question that she threw, so she just work around it a week later. There’s no inconvenience when he comes, instead it’s just talking with one another. The items that he brought is precious because he brought the ingredients couldn’t be obtained from the forest. He also brought miscellaneous items like books from time to time.

She was able to live relatively well with the demons and today she suddenly remembered.

The magic square that Ray-sama gave her, where is it?

「Un, I didn’t have it in my room so I think it should be here」
「What are you doing?」

A stupid voice was came from her back while she was clamoring  in the storeroom.

「Ah, welcome home. Anyway, when I left the castle there was a magic square that I got from my master, but it seemed that I misplaced it」
「Oh, this thing?」
「That’s it ……Umm?」

I directed the words to Av, who waved the paper in his hands.

「Why do you have my paper!?」
「I’m the one who carried your baggage, remember? If an unknown person has an unknown magical square, it is confiscated. 」
「…」

And that was said by an unknown human that slept on someone’s bed like a log, and tried to confiscate an unknown magic square. She had prepared a lot of tsukkomi but she decided to leave him be.

For now…

「Anyway, you didn’t try to mess with it, right?」
「……well… 」
「You didn’t mess with it, RIGHT!?!」

It’s something that I got from Ray-sama.
It’s something that I got from THAT Ray-sama.
What would happened if he messed it up………

Av seemed to enjoy her desperate expression.

「There are only a few people who can draw a magic square. It’s not a thing that anyone can tamper on 」
「Ah I see, thank god 」
「It was a one directional magic square where someone from the other side can relocate to this place, so from now on I made it possible for us to relocate to the Kingdom. That’s all I can read from it. I couldn’t find any other use」
「Av!!!」

She couldn’t stand this person anymore. She had found out from the short exchange, but this man is a cheat on 2 legs. He had no difficulty at analyzing magic squares and had no problem using advanced magic.

Is it common ikemens in this Kingdom to be strong?

「Don’t worry. It’s a small change so no one should be able to notice it. It will be fine as long as you kept it a secret. 」

Av-san handed out the magic square like nothing.

「Please forgive me, ok? 」

I spread the magic square on the floor and looked at it. It was filled with complicated letters and signs.

「Av, you said that “someone from the other side can relocate to this place”, isn’t it?」
「Yes, only one directional though」
「In other wor-」

The magic square shines brightly.

「…」
「…」

2 figures could be seen on the magic square.

「「Rio!!!」」
「Hiiiiii!!」

She let out miserable voice out of surprise.
Because the face of Spartan Instructor from hell was popped up on the paper.

“If you are not picking this up, why are you translating it?”
What a coincidence, I am wondering the same thing, myself.

Seriously, I don’t know why I translate it.

Heibon 9. Apparently, I did see the red-eyed man

RAW: http://ncode.syosetu.com/n8321co/10/
TL: MayonaizeShrimp

It’s almost chinese new year, so I thought about buying myself a 1 year hosting plan just so I can have this automated table of content going.

「……」

Okay… First, let’s recap the situation. Hmm…

It appeared that I was inside some sort of a hut. If I had to guess, this was the hut that I  was supposed to live in. Second, I was laid on a bed inside of the hut. The first thing I recognized when I woke up was the wooden ceiling. Also, I could hear the birds chirping from outside of the window across the bed. Judging from the light coming out of it, I assumed it was around early morning.

Hmm hmm…
There was absolutely nothing wrong with this.

However, the only thing bugging me was…

「Zzzz… Zzz…」

Who the hell was this ikemen sleeping beside me!?!?

I almost jumped back in reflex when I realized that his arm was coiling around my body. If only I have my weapons with me. I scanned the room but I couldn’t find them anywhere.

I asked the spirits around us for some explanation, but for the life of me, I couldn’t exactly understand their gestures.

But at least I catch the gist of the situation.

This ikemen-san carried me to this hut and there was no sins committed between us.

Those 2 facts are very important.
Especially the later one.

「Maybe he’s not a bad guy…? probably…?」

I slowly released myself from his arms and stood up so I could inspect the room in more detail. For the matter of fact, we were sleeping in some sort of bedroom. Opening the door, there was a hallway. In the hallway, there were 3 doors that were connected to its own room.

I opened one of the doors in the hallway and found myself in a relatively large living room. It contained a kitchen as well, with a table for 4 people right in front of a kitchen counter. On the kitchen’s right-hand side of the room, there was space to have some talks right in front of the fireplace.

Since Rey-sama was quite furious about this place, I was worried about what environment they sent me into. Surprisingly, I was given this hut which came with a toilet, bath, and even a storeroom. All without paying a single cent. Hey, isn’t this quite a good deal?

Well, rather than the hut, I think Rey-sama was angry about them sending me into this place…

「Ah! Found it!」

I breathed a sigh of relief after finding my luggage. My weapons were casually laid on the top of the table. Of course, I wouldn’t and couldn’t use my bow indoor, but I could at least equip myself with my sword and dagger. It was at that moment when I realized…

「I… Wasn’t I supposed to be dying?」

I wasn’t thinking about it when I scrounge around the hut, but I was pretty sure I was dying before I fainted. What happened after that? My injuries were healed without any traces and my clothes were perfectly fine as well.

「Was it magic? But who did it…? No way, did that ikemen actually…?」
「It’s 『Yes way』 actually.」
「……!?」

(RAW text:
「Masaka… Sakki no ikemen-san? 」
「Sono “masaka” da」
「……!?」
)

I turned around right immediately. The previously-sleeping-ikemen was yawning to shake his drowsiness off.

「Your overall condition looks much better now, I see…」
「Eh?」

He observed me from top to bottom before giving me another nod.
Meanwhile, I kept looking straight at his face.
Where did I see his face again?

His black hair was about waist-length. His moderately fit body was quite tall, at least 2 heads taller than me. Each part of his face was well-featured.
But the thing that stood out the most was his eyes. Both of his slightly slanted eyes shone.

Deep dark red.
I know!! This guy must be…

「Ah! You are the KY guy in the forest!!」
「k-kei wha-?」

(TL: KY = Kuuki Yomenai – being unable to read the situation or being unable to pick up on the mood of a conversation)

Now I remembered.

Wasn’t he the creep who kept saying『Are you dying?』 and 『How foolish』 right in front of a severely injured person!?

「Why are you here!?」
「Why speaking in such manner? Is that how you talk to someone who carried you all the way to this hut, healed you, and took care of you when you were suffering from constant feverish nightmare for 3 days straight? Isn’t that just rude?」

「……You did?」
「Mm-hmm…」

The spirits around us nodded in agreement, so it must be true.

「Eh umm… I… am deeply grateful for your help」
「”Deeply grateful”. My name is “Avard”. Yours?」

「Oh, err… I am “Rio Akizuki”」
「Rio, was it? You can call me “Av”. These guys were causing a huge fuss so I helped you. Things will be very interesting」

I caught something behind his sneering laugh.

「By “These guys” did you mean…?」
「Hm? You can see spirits too, can’t you?」

He said as he poked one of the spirits that flew around him.

「You can see them too!?」
「Of course I can. Well, duh」

He nodded like it was the most natural thing to do.

「That’s a surprise… I thought only Rey-sama and I could see them… Is it because the other people who can see them didn’t say anything?」
「Ah no, it’s rare for humans to be able to see these guys in the first place. I was surprised too. By the way…」

He closed the distance and went right to my face.

「……what?」

No matter how good-looking he was, he won’t be able to catch me off guard.

I had spent my time looking at Rey-sama’s genderless androgynous beauty. There was also Arami-sama, Rey-sama’s assistant with her smart intellectual beauty. Not to mention those guys in the frontline corps, with their super-tempered muscles. Whatever type of beauty you’re talking about, I had seen it all.

Av was handsome, sure, but even after looking at his face right at my face, I didn’t feel I need to show any particular emotion.

Aaah… but really, he was so damn handsome. I just noticed his red eyes, but those eyes looked really good on him. Like really, it made you want to just close in and looked into his face real close. The word “this is fun” was written all over his face.

「You… Are you not afraid of my eyes?」
「What’s wrong with your eyes?」

「Most humans are afraid of my eyes. They fear and scorn me like some sort of abomination」
「Hmm? But aren’t the people in this world colorful enough to begin with? To be honest, I don’t think having red eyes is enough for people to be treated differently」

The people of this world was really colorful. As a pure-bred Japanese, I always wonder how did the people of this world have such colorful hair and eyes. For that reason, I didn’t think that 1 guy having red eyes would attract that much attention from such a colorful crowd.

By the way, I never dyed my hair.

It wasn’t because that I am such a good child or anything, but I just found it annoying if my hair lost its color over time and I had to dye it again and again.

「I see. So you are saying that I am just like any other people. Interesting indeed. I can assume that you could say that because you don’t know what these eyes mean. But what was it that you said before? Are you an otherworlder? If I remembered correctly, the humans summoned a goddess about 20 days ago. So answer me, human. Who are you?」

His mouth formed a curve as he observed me curiously.

Nooooo!!!
How could I make such a stupid slip-up!?

Who the hell refers to a place as 『This world』, you dumb me!?
Aren’t otherworlders the only ones who do that!?

I failed… Even though Rey-sama had warned me to keep this as a secret right before my departure!!

「Ah… Ummm……」

I meekly glanced over his face and saw that he was totally serious.

It’s no use crying over a spilt milk.
Brace yourself, me.

「There was another person that was dragged into the summoning process. That person was me. Nice to meet you」(TL: お見知り置き – (JParser) formal phrase used on first meeting with someone to encourage them to remember you. (Shrimp’s Addendum) Like crushing their hand when you first shake hand)

I provided him with my sweetest smile to make sure he got it.

「By “dragged into”, did you mean that there is a 『proper goddess』 besides you? Can I assume that they’re getting rid of the nuisance and sent you here?」
「That “nuisance” you speak of is in this hut, you know? They sent me to this hut, which is located at least 3 km away from any sign of human community」
「Such a terrible  wonderful life you are living in」
「That’s totally right. But it doesn’t change the fact that I was sent here」

It can’t be helped.

As dangerous this place was, I lacked the common knowledge to live outside of this place. The information that I got from books were too limited. No matter how useful they were, those were text-book knowledge after all.

It is the world of “reality” that I must live.
And if I try to leave this “reality”, well, the result was obvious.

That’s why, I had no choice but to desperately gain as much strength as possible while I was in the castle.

「You want to live right inside a monster den? Even though you just died a few days ago?」
「Ugh… even if it’s painfully true, I still have a plan, you know?」
「plan?」
「Maybe I should start “forcefully feeding” or so…」

I read about it in one of the books back in the castle. The book explained this general monster trait in great detail. According to the book, most monsters love sweets.

I had no reason to not try it. I’m not that great of a cook, but at least my freshly baked cookies were not that embarrassingly horrible. I didn’t know how far I could go with this method, but it worth the try.

No! I’ll definitely do it! Ah, meanwhile, Av-san was still looking at me like I am some sort of interesting object he just found.

PS: Thank you, hb98rml for pointing out the grammar error
And thank you helpful advisor for the reference of the slang KY. Apparently, I was referencing the wrong term.

I’m a Chinese, so this should be a good time for me to make a new year resolution. I’m buying a hosting plan for myself so I can get an automated table of content. (This time for sure. I’m not a college student anymore. I got a fulltime job now)

Also, I’m going to split my novels into 2 categories, which are:
1. Translated with effort
Means that I try to get the accuracy as close to the original text as possible. This category includes Isekai GM and No Fatigue. Any series in this category will be edited with a proper editor. Will take a super long time to translate.
2. Poorly translated
Means that it will focus more on translation speed. The quality will most likely be a lot closer to the latter chapters of YTIF and the current chapters of Heibon. The chapter may or may not be edited. I will promise myself to not spend more than 3 hours on each chapter.

Let’s see how long it takes before I break my new year resolution.

Heibon 8. On my 20th night, I died

RAW: http://ncode.syosetu.com/n8321co/9/

This is an unedited mess.
Read at your own risk.

Let me declare the result.
I somehow won the fight against those monsters.

I put everything I had and managed to survive without losing any limbs.

To be honest, I wouldn’t win without the spirits. Since they were unable to just watch me struggle, they lent me help for free. Thanks to them, I could barely win without losing both of my arms and legs.

But the spirits themselves had little mana on their own.

Despite being able to use “mana” to create a “phenomenon” called “magic”, without having humans as power supply, their mana was only enough to cast elementary spells a couple of times. But together with humans, the spirits could demonstrate even more powerful “magic”.

Back to my situation, even with the little mana they had, the spirits helped and saved my life. I should give them the appropriate reward in mana after the battle was over. Apparently, it would be fine to reward them after they finished the job.

I should keep this in mind when I had to conserve my mana in the future, even though the spirits could only use the lowest tier of spells…

Currently, I still managed to think rationally and carefully, but my actual condition was quite horrible. There were bite marks, scratches, and gashes all over my body. My arm was weirdly red and hurt quite a lot. I couldn’t walk without dragging one of my legs. With this amount of wound, I was amazed that I hadn’t died yet.

The light spirits offered their help and illuminate my path. With this, I didn’t need to worry about consuming any more mana, but I worried that I might die before reaching the hut.

「Enough… I can’t do this anymore…」

I knew I should use my energy to walk instead of complaining, but my blurring vision was getting worse and worse. Was it the start of the countdown until the end of my life?

「Nuuuuu, I dun wanna dieeeee. If I were to die, lemme die on a fluffy futon at the leasssttt」

Seeing me spouting gibberish sentences, the spirits flew frantically around me. Half of these spirits came with me from the royal capital and the other half were residents of this forest. Apparently, Rey-sama said that spirits like me for some reason.

「If I knew it would be like this, I should have learned at least a healing spell……」

If I remembered correctly, there was a spell that could cure wounds in the higher rank of light magic. The middle ranked spells in light attribute magic were centered around offensive and support spells, but the healing spells were surprisingly difficult to learn.

「This is bad… I might die for reー」

I leaned on a tree but I started to slide down and sit on the ground.

My limbs were freezing.
I had lost about half of my senses.
My chest hurts every time I breathe the air, some of my ribs must be broken.

I felt like I couldn’t move even a finger anymore, so I closed my eyes. The spirits were hitting my cheek repeatedly with their small hands to keep me awake.

「sorrー let me… sleep… a bit…」

My consciousness was fading away.

Aah, I don’t think I could wake up anymore. Suddenly, at the edge of my consciousness, I heard a rustling of a grass being stepped on.

Somebody was approaching me.

「I came to check why the forest was unusually noisy, why is there a human over here?」

The footstep stopped right in front of me.
That person spoke in human language.

「Oi, answer me. What are you doing here?」

Judging from how his low voice reverberates, this person must be a man. But even if I could confirm his appearance, I didn’t have enough energy to open my eyes anymore.

「……w-who?」

The words I voiced were hazy at best.

「So you were attacked by monsters? Are you… dying?」

The hell is this man saying?
Asking such a stupid question to someone who had wound all over her body.
Besides, that didn’t answer my question at all.

Oh please, I don’t mind if you don’t even try to help me.
Because you are one of this world’s inhabitant, aren’t you?
You are all as heartless as ever.

I felt like asking “Then what are you here for?” back to him if I could.

「You didn’t understand your own power and yet you still came to this place. Foolish human, is it your fate to die in obscurity here?」

Aah, god damn it.
What is it with him?
Can’t he leave me alone as I am?
I might die at any moment, so what kind of brute to ask such question to a dying person like me?

If you don’t want to save me, then go away.
If you still have any conscience left, then help me.
I still hadn’t given up.

I don’t have the time, stamina, or energy to spare for you.

「So annー oying… I don’t kno…w fate… I know… I am weak… I’m not… here becーause I want… to…… I don’t want… to die so I… I struggled. Stop boーbothering me…」

I hoarsed broken sentences back to him.
With all my remaining willpower, I opened my eyes as I finished speaking.

「Who the hell… will die… in this place!!?」

I could see red eyes behind my blurry vision. The last sentence I said took every little bit of my strength. I saw his eyes widen in surprise as my vision started to get even more blurry.

And finally, my whole world was dyed in darkness.

ーーーーー

ーーー

「……did she died?」

On the brink of death, she boldly exclaimed and smirked before falling unconscious. But she didn’t seem like breathing.

「The monsters should deal with her if I leave her here」

How long ago since I had a conversation with another human without them fearing me?
How long ago since I met a human that didn’t panic after looking straight into my eyes?

Ah well, it was probably because she was on her death door……

I wonder how long before her shallow breath finally ran out. I didn’t know why such a weak person was in this forest, but while the fact states that I found her, I don’t have any obligation to help her.

「……hm? What do you guys want?」

Before I could turn my back and pretend not seeing her, several spirits blocked my way. They were doing their best gesturing something to me.

「You want me to help this girl……? How foolish…」

I smirked as I realized their intention and walked away.
Why do I have to help this human?

「……Oi, that’s enough」

I only walked another 2 steps before the spirits blocked me again.

They didn’t even lose their nerve even after hearing the anger in my voice. So they really want me to save this girl.

*pat* A spirit hit my cheek.

*pat pat* A spirit hit my other cheek.

*pat pat pat* Another spirit hit my forehead.

*pat pat pat pat pat pat pat* The spirits hit me everywhere on my face.

*pon* A spirit made a flaming ball.

*pon pon* Another spirit made a water ball.

*pon pon pon* Some other spirit made a ball of air.

*pon pon pon pon pon* The other spirits made various balls according to their elements.

「Oi, what are you guys doing? Are you trying to pick a fight with me? Even if you are spirits, that doesn’t mean that I turn a blind eye on you」

Even when I threaten them, they still wouldn’t back down.

「What are you trying to say? Good grief……」

Their small hands couldn’t hurt me in any way.

Even if they attacked me together with their elementary spells, they still couldn’t hurt me.

But……

「Gaaah! You guys are annoying!!! Okay, I get it! I will help her!!」

With that, I carried the gloomy and yelling-in-despair girl on my back. Satisfied with me helping her, the spirits went ahead as if guiding us.

「Really, you guys. What’s so interesting with this girl anyー」

She was the only human in this monster-filled forest. But even with that, looking at her sorry state, anyone could know that she wasn’t strong by any means. Even this girl knew about it herself. With her current strength, there was no way that she could survive in this forest.

So as expected, the girl was dying right now.
But the spirits insisted on helping her.
But why?

The spirits never showed any interest in humans so far. Even if they had any interest, the humans couldn’t see them anyway. Their only relationship was only for spirits to use magic and humans providing them with mana. Therefore, they shouldn’t even be concerned with her dying.

But they want to save this girl.
In other words, that means……

「She can see you guys?」

The spirits whirling around her as an answer to my suspicion.

「Kukuku… I certainly picked up something interesting」

Their answer filled me with laughter. In this world filled with boredom, there might still be something that can entertain me. The spirits stopped near some sort of a hut, perhaps this was the place where this girl was trying to go.

「Well then, little girl. Will you be able to kill me?」

The dying human girl only gave me shallow breath as a response. If she dies, then she dies. But if she could survive, she might be able to fulfill my “wish”.

Now, girl…

I wonder what kind of reaction you would make when you open those eyes of yours again.

「Do your best and entertain me, human girl」

In front of the door, where the moonlight barely lit, the man’s bright red eyes shone even more in enjoyment.

My 20 days stay in the royal castle had ended and now I was inside a rather grandiose carriage. It shook a lot but it was still tolerable. But the one that took the most damage was my butt and lower back. Also, my churning stomach didn’t exactly help keeping my motivation up.

Where was I going? Since I was kicked out from the royal castle, I was currently moving towards a place called the 『Beast Fang Forest』.

If I quote Rey-sama, he said that “It is a very dangerous place”.
If I quote Tonic-san, he said that “Like hell I would step into that place again”.
If I quote Cryhart-sama, he said that “It’s a fun playground”.

Ugh… anyway… It’s not exactly a place for a young woman like me (no matter the age) to live and provide for herself.

But having said that, I had no options to reject it.
Like literally.
So I resigned myself when I saw the carriage came in the middle of the night.

The royal family gave me the standard cookie-cutter apology in form of some living necessities like money, food, and clothes. Rey-sama gave me a huge parchment containing a magic square and a small knife. Tonic-san gave me a slim one-handed blade similar to a katana and a set of bow and arrow.

And with that, I was sent off with minimal possession to the place where I would live for the time being.
For the rest of my life, if I’m unlucky enough.

「We have arrived」

It was right around dusk when the driver called me. As I descended from the carriage, I was greeted by a dense forest spread as far as eyes can see.

「Excuse me, is this place……?」
「There is a small hut and a small patch of land prepared for you if you advance further into this forest. Since this is as far as our carriage can take you, please proceed the rest of the journey yourself. And now, if you excuse me…」

That didn’t answer my question at all!
And why do the guards return with the carriage as well!?

「……No point arguing at this late, I guess」

In any case, standing here would not help me at all, so I started walking towards the direction that the carriage driver told me.

It had been 10 minutes since I started walking.
I felt quite anxious…
Can’t they give me a torch or something?

The sun had set completely and the moonlight couldn’t penetrate the greens of the forest.
In other words, it was pitch black.

Really.
It was so dark that I couldn’t even know if my eyes were open or not.

The feeling of darkness was overwhelming, especially since I came from a world with a lot of artificial lighting.

It was the first time I realized that this is the advanced darkness.

『Illuminate』

I pushed my left hand forward and recite the chant.

Soon after, a baseball-sized lump of light appeared from my palm and illuminated my surrounding. And since it was one of the elementary level light magic, the mana cost was next to nothing. I used to wonder whether I would need to use it, but it was surprisingly convenient.

Convenient indeed.

So I summoned another 3 lights around me and continue my journey.

A regular dark forest was enough to be considered a nightmare fuel, but unfortunately for me, this is the Beast Fang Forest. The monsters here were especially big and couldn’t be grouped together with the ones that you could find anywhere else. Even inside this pitch-black darkness, I could somehow know that they were around.

Their sharp eyes were observing something from the distance and I knew exactly what they were aiming at. I touched the sword on my waist, just holding its familiar handle gave me a boost in confidence.

Aaah, this is horrible…
Really, why do I have to experience something like this?
They were the one who dragged me here. I am the victim, you know?

Why did I receive such unfair treatment?
Is it because I was powerless?
Is it because I looked just average?
Because I have no special ability?
Because I’m not charming enough?
Because my mana pool was average?

It’s not like I didn’t know their circumstances, but that doesn’t mean that could treat me this horribly!

Aaaah… What the hell am I doing, stupid me?

They laughed at me and said that it would be “impossible” from the start, and yet I didn’t give up and still fought desperately. Being told that it was impossible boils me to the core. I fought hard to defy the reality according to my ideals. And because of that, I was often forced to experience the harsh truth called “reality”. I couldn’t move forward and had no other choice but to laugh it off and walked back. But I wasn’t that naïve to simply chase after my dreams and ignore the reality altogether.

I wasn’t that desperate either to give up and accept everything with a laugh. My way of life might sound half-hearted at best, but it didn’t change the fact that I still chase after my “dream” in this “reality”.

I had a dream.
Something I wanted to achieve.
Something I wanted to do.
And so I worked, I saved money, I learned, and I struggled. That was why I lived in this “reality”.

But all of them were snatched away in an instant.
All because I was “caught up” in this new terrible “reality”.

I had a dream.
Something I wanted to achieve.
Something I wanted to do.
And so I expended great effort for it.
To live in the future that I had always dreamed of.

And yet………

But those people… Not only they mock me, but they also kicked me like I was a pebble in their way.

They told me that there is no way I could go back. Even so, I refused to be so helpless in front of them. I refused to stand lower than those people who had abandoned me. I will do everything I could to obtain more strength.

Fine then.
I accept this “reality”.
But I refuse to let go my “dreams”.
Despite that, this was the result of my reality.

My dream was to make those people regret forcing this reality onto me, but in the end, I might not be able to fulfill my dream. To be honest, there was no way that a regular human being like me could become strong enough to overpower those people within 20 days.

Maybe I should have given up in the first place. I felt bad for Rey-sama and Tonic-san since they helped me since the very beginning, but it was my honest opinion.

I give up…
I might sound like cheering myself up, but I realized that I was not strong enough to live in this world, so I think I did my best to gain as much strength as possible.

Ah…
No matter where I was, I couldn’t fulfill my own dreams after all…
I won’t be able to meet Rey-sama and Tonic-san anymore.

It was obvious for me that while in this forest, even the most courageous people would find themselves curling in fear for their own life, stranded between life and death.

This was the reality that was spread right before my very eyes.

「Haha… I’m so stupid…」
My own voice sounded so far away.

「how stupid… stupid… This is stupid!!!」

My emotions started to overflow after being repressed for so long.

Bitterness, sorrow, fear, humiliation, confusion, and of course, anger.

「Don’t fuck with me!!
The hell do you thing a human life is!?
You think you are better than the others!? Huh!?

Don’t drag other people into your freaking mess!!
Return my life! Return my dream! Return my future!!!

You say you don’t need me because I have no ability?
Don’t just leave an otherworlder stranded in your world!
Don’t you have any conscience? And yet you still beg another otherworlder to save you like it was nothing???

IS THERE ANY SANE HUMAN BEING THIS WORTHLESS WORLD!!?」

My chest was pounding after all those screaming.

The light had dispersed because my emotion was disturbed, so my surrounding was dyed in darkness once more.

I could sense the monsters approaching.
There was no light, so I was practically in their hunting zone.

I was their prey.

「Don’t joke with me… You want a piece of me!?
Like I would die and become your dinner!
Look at me!!! I will survive and you will regret ever abandoning me!!

You think I never handled wild animals back in my previous world, huh?!
There’s no way I would lose against some animals!
I am a freaking animal trainer!!!」

Back in my previous world, I was a certified dog trainer and worked in a pet shop. It wasn’t an exaggeration to say that during 22 years of my life, there hasn’t been a single day that I didn’t meet any animals. Not only common household pets like cats and dogs, but also cows, pigs, chickens, horses, deer, various kinds of birds, raccoons, foxes, snakes, and even fish.

Of course, I never handled wild animals like lions, but I had a few shares of experiences handling bears and boars. I made quite a lot of contact by handling strange animals, but I had learned a lot from them.

「Don’t underestimate humans, you bastards!!!」

I pulled the sword from my waist, cast light magic once more, and I confronted the monsters in front of me.

TL Note:
I tried my best making her emotion stronger, but I had to paraphrase a lot of things.

  • It was the first time I realized that this is the advanced darkness.
(TL: the proper TL was “true darkness” but I can’t stop myself from inserting Spongebob reference)
